If you want to run a high performing business, there is perhaps nothing more important than (a) developing a winning strategy and (b) executing that strategy effectively.
A great strategy provides focus, coherence, and alignment. It provides leverage and it provides power. “Give me a lever long enough and I will move the world,” stated Archimedes. That’s what we’re looking for from a great strategy.
The businesses that have great strategies enjoy out comes that vastly exceed those with mediocre or non-existent strategies. And the leaders that helm these businesses enjoy similarly superior outcomes, as measured by their compensation, promotions, and recognition, relative to their peers. Simply put, great strategies produce great results.
"The first natural advantage of good strategy arises because other organizations often don't have one... A good strategy has coherence, coordinating actions, policies, and resources so as to accomplish an important end. Many organizations, most of the time, don't have this."
- Richard Rumelt, Professor Emeritus, Strategy, UCLA (2011)
